Refrigerator Facts

Your refrigerator consumes about 20% of your household’s annual energy costs. An old refrigerator can use as much energy as four ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerators manufactured after 2005! So, you may want to consider replacing your old model with a newer, more efficient model. After you have purchased a new appliance, it is tempting to move an old refrigerator or freezer to the garage, but doing so can cost you a lot of money. If you are determined to move your old refrigerator to the garage, you should at least know what it's going to cost. According to Energy Star, every 1 degree increase in temperature will cause a 2.25 to 2.5 percent increase in energy usage. That means that a garage refrigerator will use 45 to 50 percent more energy in a 90-degree garage than in a 70-degree one.
